The Transcendental Meditation movement originated in 1955 with His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi beginning to teach it publically in India. Starting 1958, he embarked on multiple world tour to teach it across the world. The movement gained popularity in the 1960s and 70s when the Beatles and the Beach Boys learned TM from Maharishi himself.

In 1963, The SRM (Spiritual Regeneration Movement) Foundation of India was established in India to oversee TM activities in the country.

The seed for Consciousness Based Education or the application of TM in education was sown with the establishment of the Students International Meditation Society (SIMS) in Germany in 1964.
